Non-disabling cerebrovascular events, included acute minor ischemic stroke (MIS) and transient ischemic attack (TIA), comprise a large proportion of ischemic cerebrovascular diseases. Early initiation of necessary treatments was crucial for preventing recurrent stroke. Essen score (ESRS) was often used in the guidance of secondary prevention choice for stroke patients. Intracranial artery atherosclerosis (ICAS) was one of the imaging parameters that independently associated with recurrent stroke after non-disabling cerebrovascular events. We intended to evaluate the association between ICAS and 3-month stroke recurrence in patients with non-disabling cerebrovascular events with different risk stratification by ESRS.
Patients in the CHANCE study with intracranial imaging data were included. Participants were categorized into different risk groups based on ESRS (low risk 0-2, moderate-high risk 3-9). We will present the categorical variables as proportions, continuous variables as mean and SD. In the univariate analysis, Kruskal-Wallis test was used for comparisons of skewed continuous variables and ordinal variable. Categorical variables were compared with the r2 statistics or Fisher exact test as appropriate. Cox proportional hazard regression model and logistic regression model will be used to analyze the association of ICAS and recurrence within 3 months after stratified by the ESRS. A two-sided P value of less than 0.05 will be considered to reach statistical significance.
ICAS was an independent predictor of both 3- and 12-month stroke recurrence in low-risk but not high-risk patients with minor ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack according to ESRS stratification.
