Homocysteine is an intermediate sulfhydryl-containing amino acid. According to previous studies, high level of Hcy could induce a neuro-inflammatory process due to its abilities to react with cytokines in the brain, leading to increased permeability of blood-brain barrier and impaired integrity of cerebral vessels. There is convincing evidence that elevated plasma Hcy level is associated with higher mortality rates from ischemic stroke, cardiovascular diseases and peripheral artery disease. However, it is still unclear whether the Hcy level is associated with the ICH and its severity. So we aimed to find the relationship between Hcy levels and ICH severity and related risk factors in a Chinese population.
It is a cross-sectional study, and we aim to use chi-square test and logistic regression to test the relationship between the elevated homocysteine Level and the severity of ICH.
An elevated Hcy level exhibited significant association with severe ICH on admission and a poor functional outcome at discharge. The relationship between HHcy and ICH severity on admission was more robust in female patients and patients without hypertension. Hcy might be a valuable biomarker for ICH patients to predict severity at onset and functional outcome at discharge.
